Richard Walker
Richard Walker was born in Buckingham County, Virginia on March 30, 1770. He was the son of Elmore Walker and Mary LaSelle. Richard had at least four siblings: James, Elmore, David, and Alexander.
Richard married Martha Smith on June 15, 1793 in Stokes County, North Carolina. Martha was born on October 19, 1766 in Stokes County, North Carolina. She had at least two brothers, Joseph and Henry.
Richard and Martha had six children: Joseph Smith, Jane, Elmore, Patsy, Richard, and George Washington Walker.
Richard moved the family from Stokes County, North Carolina to Jefferson County, Tennessee about 1798. Most of the children, except Joseph, were probably born there.
The family moved to Bledsoe County, Tennessee. They were there by early 1817, when Richard bought 150 acres from John McIver (Bledsoe Co., TN Deed Book C, pg. 54-56). He sold half of this land to his son Elmore in 1825 ( Bledsoe Co., TN Deed Book D, p. 245).
They moved again, to Rhea County, Tennessee, probably by 1820.
Several of the children married in Tennessee. Joseph married Mary Atkins in 1821. Patsy married Pleasant O'Brien in 1824. Elmore married Henrietta Burch, also in 1824. Jane married George Oxsheer in 1827.
Martha died August 13, 1823. She may be buried in the Wilson Cemetery in Rhea County.
Richard remarried on September 01, 1825 to Mary Broyles. Mary was born on September 05, 1799.
Richard and Mary had nine children between 1826 and 1840: Elizabeth, Daniel Broyles, Margaret Ann, Mary, LaVaina, Flavous Josephus, Jesse, Tennessee, and Eunice.
Some of Richard's adult children moved to Morgan County, Alabama in the 1820's, including Joseph & Mary Walker, Jane & George Oxsheer (who returned to Bledsoe County), and Elmore & Henrietta. Elmore may have gone to Indiana as early as 1824.
Richard and Mary remained in Rhea County. They appear in the 1850 census with all their children except Elizabeth, who had likely married by that time.
Mary Broyles Walker died in the early 1850's, probably in Rhea County.
Richard left Rhea County about 1857 and joined his older children in Monroe County, Indiana.
Richard Walker died on August 16, 1859 in Monroe County, Indiana, and was buried in Walkers Chapel Cemetery.
