Mariah Ann Sutphen and John Pinckney Davidson

Mariah Ann Sutphen was born April 6, 1848 in Tennessee, daughter of John S. Sutphen and Matilda W. Crisman. The family moved to Nacogdoches County, Texas two years later.

Mariah's father died in 1858, and her mother died in 1860, when she was only 11 years old. Her eldest brother, William Sutphen, was granted guardianship of Mariah and her minor siblings in 1860.

She married John Pinckney Davidson on March 11, 1866.

John Davidson was born in Athens, Alabama on September 19, 1842, son of Larner Davidson and Harriett Goodrich. The Davidson family came to Texas in December of 1849.

John served in the Confederate army, Texas Volunteers, 12th Regiment, Company G. He fought in the battles of Pleasant Hill, Jenkin's Ferry or Blair's Landing, Richmond, Louisiana, and Saline, Arkansas. He was discharged at Hempstead, Texas.

John and Mariah had two children, John Pinckney Davidson and Attala A. Davidson. Neither child survived to adulthood, and are both buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Mariah died August 17, 1908 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, TX. She has two headstones in Nacogdoches County, Texas; one in Greenwood Cemetery (shown below), and one in Oak Grove Cemetery. She was probably buried in Oak Grove.

John died March 31, 1932, and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas.
