George Ellmore Sutphen and Mary Annah Scogin

George Ellmore Sutphen was born in Nacogdoches County, Texas on August 19, 1860, second son of William C. Sutphen and Sarah Wilson Oxsheer.

George's father William had just been granted guardianship of his own younger siblings after the death of their mother in early 1860, so George was the youngest of 11 children in the house until the following year when he got another brother.

William joined the Conferderate army in 1861 and died of measles in 1862. Sarah was left to raise all the children with only Abe and Viney to help.

George was the only one of William and Sarah's 3 children to survive to adulthood; the eldest, John, died in 1866, and the youngest, William, died in 1867. Both were buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Nacogdoches County.

The family moved to Stephens County, Texas, between 1880 and 1885. It seems likely that the year was 1880, because the family doesn't appear in the 1880 census in either Nacogdoches or Stephens counties.

George married Mary Annah Scogin on December 10, 1885 in Caddo, Stevens Co., Texas. Mary had been born Sept. 22, 1869, daughter of William Scogin and Mary Richardson Self.

George and Mary Annah had 12 children, 10 who survived to adulthood. One infant died at birth, and Emma Fay died on the kitchen table during an emergency appendectomy at the age of 9.

The family moved from Stephens County to Andrews County in West Texas, and later to Baird in Callahan County, which was a thriving railroad town east of Abilene.

George died July 12, 1937 in Baird, Callahan Co., Texas, and was buried in Baird Cemetery.
