David S. Sutphen and Sarah E. Phillips
David S. Sutphen (son of John S. Sutphen and Matilda Crisman) was born July 13, 1838 in Tennessee. He came to Texas with his family in 1850.
David served in the Confederate army as a Private, Co. H, 4th Texas Cavalry (Terrell's Reg.; 4th Reg. Mtd. Vols., 1st Reg. Sibley's Brigade) and Co. G, 12th Texas Infantry (Young's Reg.; 8th Tx Inf.).
He married Sarah E. Phillips December 23, 1868 in Rusk County, TX. Sarah was born in Meriweather County, Georgia on May 8, 1847.
They had one child, John M. Sutphen, on February 17, 1870, in Nacogdoches County, Texas.
David died July 21, 1871 in Garrison, Nacogdoches County, TX. He was killed by poison gas while cleaning water well. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Nacogdoches County, Texas. See his headstone on the Cemeteries page.
Sarah died in 1913 in Iredell, Texas.
