Tolliver S. Scogin
Tolliver S. Scogin was born about 1842 and died February 27, 1862 in Socorro, New Mexico while serving in the Confederate Army. He was the son of Wright Scogin and Susan Hawthorn.
Compiled Service Records show that Toliver served in Company H, 4th Texas Cavalry (Sibley's Brigade). He enrolled September 12, 1861 in Nacogdoches, Texas, and mustered into service September 29, 1861 at Camp Sibley near San Antonio.
The Muster-In Roll gives his age to be 19 years, valuation of horse $125.00, equipment $30.00, Gun $20.00.
Company Muster Roll for September 29, 1861 to April 30, 1862 shows him absent "in hospital Socoro N. M., dismounted 27 Feb. 1862".
There are documents for an F. S. Scogin filed with Tolliver's which are also probably his, that show him as a returned prisoner of war in the hospital at Santa Fe, and another that shows him on the list of soldiers at the Confederate Hospital at Albuquerque, listed as "dead".
CSA Treasury Department Certificate dated April 9, 1864 states the following:
"I certify that I have examined the claim of Right Scoggin father of Toliver Scoggin deceased, late Private of Captain W. L. Alexander's (?) Co. H, 4 Regiment Texas M Vols, and find that there is due to said claimant the sum of Two hundred & Eighty dollars and Forty cents, ($280.40), being for the service of said deceased from Sept. 29, 1861, the date of "mustering in" , to Feb 27th, 1862, the date of his death inclusive, 7 months and 14 (?) days at $12 per month ($89.60) for use and risk of horse at 40 cents per day ($60.80), bounty ($50), and 6 month and ~ days commutation for clothing ($25) less $~~ stoppages
Transpoertation from place of Enrollment to place of mustering 350 miles @ 10cts per mile $35 - sum (?) 20$ -- $280.40
Payable to Hon. F B Sexton Attorney of Right Scoggin father of said deceased"
The claim was paid 28 May, 1864.
The possible location of Tolliver's burial is an abandoned cemetery on the Silva family property in Soccorro, New Mexico. There is an ongoing argument about access to the graves there. See www.soldiersforgotten.com/ for information.
