Samuel Oxsheer & Sarah Wilson Oxsheer
Samuel Oxsheer was born May 18, 1777 in Russel County, Virginia.
Samuel's father was George Oxer/Auxier, who was born about 1750. George's first wife is unknown; she had two children (Samuel and his sister), and probably died young. George's second wife was Dorcas Shelly, who probably had 8 more children with George..
See Judth Tickel Need's website, www.auxier-tickelgenealogy.com, for more information on the Auxier family.
When Samuel was young, George was in financial trouble. He apprenticed Samuel to a Christopher Cooper, a blacksmith, in 1786. (Russell County, VA Court order book 2, page 15) The apprenticeship was transferred in 1794 to George's brother Abraham Auxier.
Samuel married Sarah Wilson about 1798. Sarah was born January 30, 1780 in Burke County, North Carolina, daughter of Greenberry Wilson and Temperance Bradshaw. See the Wilson Family page for more information.
The Oxsheers and Wilsons were early settlers in the Sequatchie Valley of Tennessee, an area that now includes parts of Bledsoe, Cumberland, and Rhea counties.
Samuel and Sarah had 12 children. Some stayed in the Sequatchie Valley, but several moved to Texas.
Samuel died on January 4, 1837 in Bledsoe County, Tennessee, and was buried in the Oxshire-Lee Holler Cemetery on his farm near Pikeville. (The location was called Lee Holler for Samuel's neighbor, Burrell Lee.)
