The Oxsheer Family

John B. Wells has written a very well-researched early history of our Oxsheer family. The name was originally Axer, and was "Americanized" a few times into Oxer, Auxer, Auxier, Oxier, Oxshire, Oxsher, and Oxsheer. One line ended up with the Auxier spelling, and mine has the Oxsheer spelling, but we are all from the same Axer line.

John is planning a trip to Germany in the summer of 2011 to visit our family there. Anyone interested in the Auxier/Oxsheer family who would like to travel with John to the Axer "homeland" is welcome to go. He can be contacted at wellsga@bellsouth.net.

Our original American ancestor was John Michael Axer, from the Palatinate region of southwesterm Germany. He arrived in the Port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on board the ship “Robert & Alice” on September 24, 1742, and settled in Tulpehocken Township in Lancaster (now Berks) County, Pennsylvania, a predominately German-speaking community. He was most likely a "redemptioner," or indentured servant. Michael and his wife Maria Barbara Speiss were the parents of George Oxer, shown below.

Michael was killed by Indians while serving in the Revolutionary War in Captain John Snoddy’s company of Virginia Militia, probably in August of 1777.
